South Bend
Regional Airport
South Bend Regional Airport serves over 1,000,000 travelers
annually by offering Air, Rail and Bus service to destinations
around the world. In addition to its status as the area's
transportation center, South Bend Airport is also an important
component of the economy of the region. In 1993 it is estimated
that the economic impact of S. B. R. A. to the area was over
$238,000,000. The annual operating budget of the St. Joseph
County Airport Authority which owns and operates the center is
approximately 4.0 million dollars. Annual Capital Expenditures
by the Authority and the airport tenants exceed $6,000,000.
Journeying toward tomorrow
With the completion in 1994 of a 4.5 million dollar major
terminal expansion project, South Bend Regional Airport stands
poised and ready to soar into the 21st Century. This exciting
renovation project assures improved passenger comfort and
increased space which will accommodate even more airlines in the
years to come. Spacious new waiting areas, attractive lighting,
and comfortable seating are among the renovations you'll enjoy
throughout the terminal. Of special architectural interest are
the barrel vault skylights and the second floor atrium which
provides a breathtaking view of the airfield. The upper level of
the terminal is scheduled to house a museum containing artifacts
from the area's rich aviation history.
Expanding your horizons
South Bend Regional Airport is the only airport in the
United States to have developed a multi-modal transportation
center offering air, intercity rail and interstate bus service
all at one convenient location. At South Bend Regional,
passengers have the option of traveling on any one of ten major
airlines that offer connections to destinations around the world
through nine hub cities: Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati,
Detroit, St. Louis, Pittsburgh. In 1994, a new airline joint
venture brought international airline service to the airport for
the first time. For passengers traveling by bus, South Bend
Regional Airport serves as an intercity bus terminal for the
South Bend area offering Central Greyhound, Indiana Highways,
and ABC Coach Lines service. United Limo, Inc., a commuter
limousine service, provides service to Chicago, while the
Transpo city bus line offers convenient transportation to
destinations in and around the South Bend area. To complete the
transportation picture, the South Shore inter-urban electric
rail line moved its operations to the airport in 1992. The South
Shore connects the South Bend airport with cities throughout
northwestern Indiana, with a final destination of downtown
Chicago, Illinois. This service not only provides convenient
rail transportation for local commuters, it draws
"train-to-plane" passengers to the airport from the surrounding
communities in northwestern Indiana.
