Birmingham International Airport
Birmingham International Airport is a significant part of the
Southeast's astonishing growth, and in recent years has been a
success story in its own right. As the premier gateway to
Alabama, Birmingham International Airport. It is one of the most
conveniently located airports (just 4.5 miles from downtown) in
the region. The Airport provides a base of employment for more
than 4,000 people and over 100 companies are leasing tenants.
Guided by the Birmingham Airport Authority, Birmingham
International Airport since 1986 has more than doubled its
scheduled commercial flights. It has also increased air cargo
operations, rental car facilities, corporate aviation
facilities, and other airport facilities. Since 1990, the
modernization and expansion program has invested more than $300
million to improve virtually every aspect of airport operations,
including runways, terminal facilities, support services,
parking facilities, access roadways, and airport security.
The growth and expansion of the airport are planned well into
the future. Projects on the drawing boards or already under
construction include cargo facilities, lengthening the East/West
runway, terminal expansion, new flight support facilities, and
more.
